Race Only Registration Link

Chicago area runners, swimmers and cyclists who may have thought that the 8-day Gay Games competition was too much for their work schedules - or wallets - should think again.

Making good on promises to make the Gay Games 2006 an event for all of the Chicago area, the organizers have opened three Gay Games sports for "Direct Entry Race-Only" registration. For a lower fee, those who love to bike, swim or run can enter just the Marathon (or Half Marathon), Triathlon or the Lake Michigan "Open Water Swim."

The "race-only" registration provides individuals with access to the three races and a race medal but does not include participation in the Gay Games Opening or Closing Ceremonies. Participants are not eligible for a Gay Games Gold, Silver, Bronze or Participation medal but individuals will be recognized for any race records and may use qualifying times for entry into the 2007 Boston Marathon.

Registration fees start at just $50 for access to the international competitions. "Race only" direct entry registration will remain open online until 1 July 2006 or until races reach their maximum capacity.

Race-only competitors who wish to attend the Opening or Closing Ceremonies must purchase tickets online separately at tickets.gaygameschicago.org.

"Each of these three sports has reached its participation forecast, but there is plenty of room for them to grow," said Frank Kisner, Gay Games Sports Manager. "More participants in each of these sports raise the quality of the races for everyone. These three sports each take place on just one weekend day. Opening each to race-only registration will make the excitement of the Gay Games available to many more people." Marathon, Triathlon and Open Water Swim each also remain open for "full" registration.

There are no pre-qualifiers to participate in any Gay Games sport and all are welcome regardless of ability, sexual orientation, age, ethnicity, or gender. Regular "full" registration for Gay Games sports will close 15 June 2006 except for sports that close early because they reach their capacity.

Triathlon
The Gay Games Triathlon will take place on Sunday, 16 July 2006. The swim portion of the Triathlon will start at 6 am where the Chicago lakefront meets Balbo just east of Grant Park. The swim-to-bike and bike-to-run transitions take place at Monroe. The Triathlon finish line is at Hutchinson Field between Roosevelt and Balbo just west of Lake Shore Drive.

The Triathlon is available at both the Olympic (1.5K Swim, 40K Bike, 10K Run) and Sprint Distances (750 meter Swim, 20K Bike, 5K Run). The Triathlon is also available as a team sport where one person swims, the second person bikes, and the third person runs. Each individual must register whether competing at either distance or as a member of a Triathlon team.

Open Water Swim
The 1.5K Open Water Swim will follow the same route as the Triathlon swim and will start at 7:30 am on Sunday, 16 July 2006, after the Triathletes have exited the water.

Marathon/Half Marathon
The Gay Games Marathon will take place on Saturday, 22 July 2006, and will start at 6 am near 31st Street and the Lake. Runners will travel north along the lake to Fullerton, turn and run back down the Lakefront to 67th street, finishing back near 31st street. The Marathon is also available in the Half-Marathon distance.
