"Faith and Fairness" Town Meeting & Concert - July 16, Chicago
|
2006-05-31
A "Faith and Fairness" town meeting, a choral concert and the Shower of Stoles exhibition will be featured during the Gay Games VII opening weekend this summer. The Human Rights Campaign is bringing in religious leaders from across the United States to discuss how to counter religious attacks on the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.
During the free event, to be held Sunday, July 16 from noon - 4p.m. at the Cultural Center, 77 E. Randolph, the Shower of Stoles will be on display. The Shower of Stoles is a collection of more than 1,000 liturgical stoles and other sacred items from gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons from 26 denominations in six countries.
The event will begin with the Town Meeting, followed by a choral concert directed by Professor Gregg Payne, founder and artistic director of IllumiNation Chorale, and featuring Bishop Yvette Flunder, founder and senior pastor at City of Refuge United Church of Christ in San Francisco, and singer Shirley Miller, dedicated to presenting spirituality through song and action.
Harry Knox, director of HRC’s Religious and Faith Program, will moderate the town meeting, which will feature the following panelists: Rev. Susan Brooks Thistlethwaite, Ph.D., the 11th President of Chicago Theological seminary; Daayiee Abdullah, the Moderator for the Muslim Gay Men Discussion Group since 2000; Larry Yang, who leads Buddhist meditation retreats and groups for LGBTQ communities, people of color, men’s groups, people in recovery from addiction, and other diverse communities; and Rabbi Joshua Lesser, the spiritual leader of Congregation Bet Haverim, a diverse and growing Reconstructionist synagogue founded by gay and lesbian Jews.
"HRC's Religion and Faith Program is proud to be teaming up with the Gay Games to present the real truth about God and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people," said HRC’s Harry Knox.
"The Gay Games will welcome people from many faiths from 70 countries around the world," said Tracy Baim, Gay Games Co Vice Chair, and head of the Affiliated Events for Gay Games VII. "We are excited to have such a diverse group of panelists and performers for this event, which will help give tools to those who are fighting for LGBT rights around the world."
