Hosted Housing Fact Sheet For Prospective Hosts
|
2006-04-25
Thank you very much for your interest in serving as housing host during the 2006 Gay Games.
Hosting a Gay Games participant in your home is a great opportunity and responsibility. You will share a wonderful experience with someone coming to Chicago for the Gay Games, learning from them – and they from you – during the 8 days from July 15-22, 2006. As a host you will also be representing Chicago, the Gay Games, and our community. Both host and guest have a responsibility to be respectful, thoughtful and helpful. Chicago and the Midwest have some of the best people in the world so we’re confident that you will help represent us well!
Whether you are hosting someone from St. Louis, New York, Sydney, or Tokyo, you will likely find that customs vary. Our Hosted Housing Matching Service will give you the opportunity to interact with your guest. Take the time to ask and answer questions so that you are both comfortable. After all, that person is going to be your guest for a week!
Host Sign Up Procedures
To sign up as a Host, first visit http://www.gaygameschicago.org/chicago/housing.php.
1. You will need to register in the Hosted Housing system first. Select the link “Click Here to Register” and provide your name, email address and select a password. You will receive an email confirmation. Within that email is a link that you click to return to the Hosted Housing page. If the link isn’t live, cut and paste the full link into your browser to confirm. You must confirm your email with this link in order to be allowed to Log In.
2. Once back at http://www.gaygameschicago.org/chicago/housing.php, you should log in. You are registering as a Host. Read and acknowledge the Release Waiver. This is important as you must acknowledge the risks associated with a hosted housing relationship. The procedures are the same for Guests and Guests will also have to read and acknowledge this Waiver. Please take normal precautions as you engage in a conversation with someone you do not yet know.
3. Answer the questions in the online form and press submit.
4. Once you are in the system, people looking for hosted housing (“Guests”) will be able to search the system for Hosts suitable to them. They will contact you directly via email. The Guests will not be able to see any of your personal information or email address when they first contact you. You and the Guest should then have a conversation (phone or email – your choice) about the possible hosted housing arrangement.
5. Once you have agreed to host the participant, you can deactivate your account automatically so that other Guests don’t email you for housing. To deactivate your account, go to http://www.gaygameschicago.org/chicago/housing.php, log in and you’ll see the deactivation link at the bottom of the Main Hosted Housing page.
Please note: You are not allowed to charge Guests for lodging. You may choose to host people of only similar gender. The nature of your home may make it unsuitable for people with certain disabilities. The hosted housing service is not designed for Guests under the age of 18. Otherwise, you should not otherwise discriminate on the basis of sex, age, race, ethnicity, religion, disability, national origin, or sexual orientation. It should go without saying that you should not use this as a dating service. We suggest you only request a photograph after July 1 and only so that you can identify the person when you meet. Other photo requests may be misinterpreted. If you have special requirements in your home, such as "no alcohol", describe that in the notes field.
Make Chicago Shine! Because you are also representing the Gay Games and the City of Chicago, it is important that you respond to each email inquiry you receive from Guests. There is a great deal of pent-up demand for this service so in the first couple of weeks after you sign-up online you will likely receive numerous emails. Please patiently reply to each one. If you receive emails after you have already agreed to host a Guest, simply reply back and say that your home is full and urge that they try another possible Host. You should then log-in again and deactivate your account so that people don’t continue to send you emails.
Team or Group: Some people may contact you with a request to host a team or a group. If you are able to accommodate them, great! However, feel free to suggest that they consider another housing option for a large group. In addition to hotels and hosted housing the Gay Games also offers accommodations at universities downtown as well as at a downtown hostel. For groups this might be more appropriate.
Families: A Gay Games participant must be 18 years of age by 14 July 2006 to participate. For liability reasons, the Hosted Housing service is not available to people under 18, including children who will be accompanied by adults. If you are contacted by someone looking for accommodation that includes children under 18, please refer them back to the general housing information on the website, or have them email info@gaygameschicago.org.
Thank you again for your help. We hope you are as excited about the Gay Games coming to Chicago as we are and we appreciate your help in hosting the participants coming in July.
